Advising on Global Health Product and Funding Structure

Background

Global leader in health research, advocacy and program implementation space sought advisory support for its program development and funding strategies. Ultimately the client was interested in finding new ways to attract partners, and leverage their services as a delivery partner for innovative funding scenarios.

Challenge

Client had been operating with the same program delivery model for nearly a decade, attracting the same types of partners and working on the same grant-funding model. Client wanted guidance on how to shift its programming to be more attractive to innovative financing (debt, or recoverable grants) and capacity building on what others in their space were exploring around new types of funding models.

Approach

Over a period of 3 months, Joanne Sonenshine worked with SVP for Partnerships on developing new product ideas for program delivery. She also performed a scoping exercise of innovative funding and service delivery models that others in the health sector were utilizing. From there Joanne made recommendations to client on which programs could be adapted to respond to shifting funding models, and how innovative financing could be attracted to client’s programming more broadly.

Results

Found that both existing and new partners would be attracted to engage with client around new funding opportunities in a more innovative financing space. Set SVP up with Board recommendations on what service offerings to select, how to structure them, how to price them, and ideas around potential buyers.

Reflection

Client was being proactive in developing new service delivery models given the shfiting funding landscape of its partners. Client became much more prepared to have conversations with funding partners and collaborators around how to craft new programs that are aligned with innovative financing mechanisms. Client is pilot testing one approach in 2026.
